A History of the Garden of Love / Una historia del Huerto Comunitario de Amor

As we have been preparing for the 16th Blessing of the Soil in our Community Garden of Love, we thought it would be interesting to share a little bit of the history of the garden!

In the late 2000s, then CCCSR Executive Director Martha Robles forged a partnership with the Bon Secours health system with a vision of a community-wide gardening project. With so many neighbors in need of food for themselves and their families, this would be an opportunity to bring people together to tend the earth and grow fresh, nutritious food that could help feed those people in need. Three gardens were created through this collaboration: the Garden of Hope at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, the Garden of Faith at the Marydell Faith and Life Center in Nyack, operated by St. Ann's parish, and of course the Garden of Love by our office in Haverstraw. To this day, all three gardens continue to support the community.

 

Technically, the first blessing of the soil took place in November 2009 before the land was made into a garden, but the annual tradition officially began in spring 2010. In 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, current Executive Director Daniel Eudene hosted the Blessing of the Soil over Zoom as we all adjusted to the new normal of social distancing and mask wearing. In 2024, we were joined by Cardinal Timothy Dolan for the festivities.

 

We're looking forward to gathering with the community for this year's Blessing of the Soil in just a few weeks on Saturday, May 3rd from 12:00pm-1:30pm! The theme of the event is "From Seed to Supper," and there will be fun activities for children, refreshments, and an opportunity to learn more about CCCSR's programs. We hope to see you there! ¡Mientras nos preparábamos para la 16.ª Bendición de la Tierra en nuestro Huerto Comunitario de Amor, pensamos que sería interesante compartir un poco de la historia del huerto!

 

A finales de la década del 2000, la entonces Directora Ejecutiva de CCCSR, Martha Robles, se asoció con el sistema de salud Bon Secours con la visión de un proyecto de huerto comunitario. Con tantos vecinos necesitados de alimentos para sí mismos y sus familias, esta sería una oportunidad para unir a la gente para cuidar la tierra y cultivar alimentos frescos y nutritivos que pudieran ayudar a alimentar a quienes los necesitaban. Gracias a esta colaboración, se crearon tres huertos: el Huerto de la Esperanza en Good Samaritan Hospital de Suffern, el Huerto de la Fe en Marydell Faith and Life Center de Nyack, administrado por la parroquia de St. Anne, y, por supuesto, el Huerto del Amor junto a nuestra oficina en Haverstraw. Hasta el día de hoy, los tres huertos continúan apoyando a la comunidad.

 

Técnicamente, la primera bendición de la tierra tuvo lugar en noviembre de 2009, antes de que el terreno se convirtiera en un jardín, pero la tradición anual comenzó oficialmente en la primavera de 2010. ¡Esperamos reunirnos con la comunidad para la Bendición de la Tierra de este año en unas pocas semanas, el sábado 3 de mayo de 12:00 p. m. a 1:30 p. m.!
